How many hours is it from New York to California by car?

About 42 to 45 hours of driving, not counting stops for fuel, food, rest and sleep. That is why a New York to California drive takes about 4 days when one person is driving.

How far is it from New York to California?

About 2,800 miles, a little more or less depending on where in New York you start and where in California you finish. Plan on four days, with three nights on the road.

Can you drive from New York to California?

Yes. There are two main routes, and the right one depends on where in California you are going and what month it is.

I-80: fastest to Northern California

Across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada to San Francisco. The main cities on the way are Cleveland and Toledo, the Chicago area, Des Moines, Omaha, Cheyenne, Salt Lake City and Reno. It is the most direct line, and the one most exposed to winter weather over Wyoming and the Sierra.

I-70, I-44 and I-40: the southern option to Los Angeles

I-70 to St. Louis, I-44 to Oklahoma City, then I-40 through the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico and Arizona into Southern California. You pass Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff. It is longer in miles, usually safer from November to March, and it follows old Route 66 for much of the way.

Weather and seasons

Winter, November to March, is the risk on the northern route: snow and wind over Wyoming and the Sierra can close roads. The southern route is the safer choice in winter. In summer the heat in the Mojave is the problem, so carry water and watch the car’s temperature.

What the road is like

Pennsylvania crosses the Appalachians on a toll road. Ohio, Indiana and Illinois are flat and fast. Missouri and Oklahoma add hills and spring thunderstorms. The Texas Panhandle is flat, open and windy. I-40 in New Mexico and Arizona climbs above 7,000 feet, so cold snaps matter in winter, and the Mojave is hot in summer.

Tolls

Tolls depend on the route. On I-80, expect turnpike tolls in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. On the southern route, the main toll road is the Oklahoma turnpike on I-44. Around New York City you also pay bridge and tunnel tolls, and the western states are mostly toll-free.

New York to California car shipping vs. hiring a driver

Driving yourself: roughly $450 to $550 in fuel and tolls (rough estimate, October 2026), three nights of hotels and meals, and about 4 days of your time.

Shipping by carrier: quoted at about $1,497 to $2,450 (MoveBuddha and FreightWaves), as of October 2026. These are third-party figures, not our prices. Expect a one-to-three-week window from pickup to delivery, and carriers usually limit or ban personal items in the car. Shipping is usually cheaper and slower.

Hiring our driver: $1,900 to $2,500 base plus fuel and tolls at actual cost, delivered in 3 days or less with a reasonable amount of personal items inside. Coast-to-coast trips come in below our usual per-mile range, because the rate falls on longer trips. If you are choosing between shipping and a driver, the difference is time and handling: your car is never loaded onto a carrier, and it arrives on the delivery date planned with you.

When you compare shipping quotes, remember that the carrier figures above are third-party estimates, and that a quote for shipping does not include the days you wait for a carrier.

How our New York to California service works

We pick up anywhere in New York State, from the city to the North Country, and deliver anywhere in California, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and everywhere between. Whether the trip starts in Brooklyn or Buffalo, your driver inspects and photographs the car at pickup, drives about 1,000 miles a day with the trip GPS-monitored by our office, and walks the car with you at delivery.

One professional driver drives your car the whole 2,800 miles, vetted with criminal, driving-record, drug and reference checks.

What the price includes

Your base price includes your driver’s travel home, usually a flight, and we give you a fuel and toll estimate up front. Fuel and tolls are then charged at actual cost, with receipts. The per-mile rate falls on longer trips, which is why the New York to California price sits below our usual range.

A typical three-day schedule

  • Day 1: New York toward St. Louis, about 950 miles, across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
  • Day 2: St. Louis toward Albuquerque, about 1,000 miles, through Oklahoma City and Amarillo.
  • Day 3: Albuquerque to Los Angeles, about 800 miles, across Arizona and the Mojave Desert.

Our driver takes 3 days or less. Depending on where in each state the trip starts and ends, it can be about two and a half days. The exact stops move with weather and traffic, and the driver rests properly each night: we do not run drivers through the night. Your driver will call you about eight hours before delivery.

If you drive it yourself

  • Leave the Northeast early in the day to clear the toll roads before rush hour, and plan to pass Chicago or St. Louis outside peak traffic.
  • Watch the forecast for Wyoming and the Sierra from November to March; the southern route is the safer bet.
  • Fuel at a quarter tank west of Nebraska; stations thin out.
  • Plan for the heat in the Mojave in summer and carry water.
  • Stop every two to three hours to stretch, and share the driving if you are not alone.
  • Check tires, fluids, lights and brakes before you leave; a 2,800-mile trip finds every weak spot.
