California to New York road trip: which route?
From Los Angeles or San Diego: I-40, I-44 and I-70
East on I-40 through Arizona, New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle to Oklahoma City, then I-44 to St. Louis and I-70 through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Columbus are the main cities on the way. The reliable winter route.
From San Francisco or Sacramento: I-80 the whole way
Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania into New Jersey and New York, passing Reno, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, Omaha, Des Moines and the Chicago area. Shortest, and the one to avoid in a Wyoming snowstorm.
Seasons and weather
From November to March the northern route can close over the Sierra and Wyoming, which is why most winter trips go south. Leaving Southern California in summer, the desert heat comes first: start early and watch the temperature gauge on long grades.
What the road is like going east
The Mojave and Arizona are hot, dry and long. I-40 climbs past 7,000 feet near Flagstaff and again in New Mexico, then drops onto the windy, flat Texas Panhandle. Oklahoma and Missouri bring hills and spring storms, and Illinois, Indiana and Ohio are flat and fast until the Pennsylvania mountains and toll road.
Tolls
Tolls depend on the route. On the southern route, the main toll road is the Oklahoma turnpike on I-44. On I-80, expect turnpike tolls in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Around New York City you also pay bridge and tunnel tolls, and the western states are mostly toll-free.
California to New York car shipping vs. hiring a driver
Shipping a car from California to New York by carrier: pickup and delivery windows of several days each, and a one-to-three-week window from pickup to delivery. Carriers usually limit or ban personal items in the car. This route is quoted at about $1,560 to $2,526 (MoveBuddha) and $1,579 to $2,291 (FreightWaves), as of October 2026. These are third-party figures, not our prices. When you compare shipping quotes, keep in mind that none of them includes the days spent waiting for a carrier.
Our driver: $1,900 to $2,500 base plus fuel and tolls, arriving in 3 days or less on the delivery date planned with you, with a reasonable amount of personal items in the car. Coast-to-coast trips come in below our usual per-mile range, because the rate falls on longer trips.
Driving yourself: about $450 to $550 in fuel and tolls (rough estimate, October 2026), plus three nights of hotels and about 4 days of your time.

How our California to New York service works
Pickup anywhere in California; delivery anywhere in New York State, New York City included. Your driver inspects and photographs the car with you at pickup, the trip is GPS-monitored by our office, and the driver calls about eight hours before delivery to set the handoff time.
One professional driver drives your car the whole way, the same driver from your driveway in California to the address in New York, vetted with criminal, driving-record, drug and reference checks.
What you pay for
The base price covers the driver and the driver’s trip home, usually a flight. You get a fuel and toll estimate before you commit, and the actual fuel and tolls come with receipts after delivery. Longer trips cost less per mile, which is why this route sits below our usual range.
Before pickup and at delivery
Have your registration, proof of insurance, the pickup and delivery addresses and your preferred pickup window ready, and tell us who will be there at each end. If the car is being sold or transferred at the other end, bring the title too.
In New York State we deliver to the door, whether that is a city address or an upstate driveway. Your driver photographs the car again at delivery, walks it with you and hands over the fuel and toll receipts.
A typical three-day schedule
- Day 1: Los Angeles toward Albuquerque, about 800 miles, across the Mojave and Arizona.
- Day 2: Albuquerque toward St. Louis, about 1,000 miles, through Amarillo and Oklahoma City.
- Day 3: St. Louis to New York, about 950 miles, across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Depending on where in each state the trip starts and ends, it can be about two and a half days. Weather and traffic move the stops, and the driver sleeps properly each night: we do not run drivers through the night.
What it costs, route by route →
If you drive it yourself

- From November to March, take the southern route unless the forecast over Wyoming is clear.
- Budget for the turnpike tolls on your route, and plan where you will stop before the New York metro area.
