Hire a Personal Driver for Your Car
A long-distance personal driver from Cross Country Driver drives your car, not people as we do not carry passengers: your driver, one of our vetted drivers, who are mostly ex-long-haul truckers and former police officers, picks the car up at your door, drives it about 1,000 miles a day and delivers it to the address where you will be, while you fly or travel separately. Since 2013 we have done it more than a thousand times, at $0.75 to $1.25 a mile.

Not a long distance chauffeur: a private driver for your car
If you want to rent a personal driver for a cross country trip, here is what that means with us: a driver for your car, not a chauffeur for you. Hourly services that drive you around town are a different business. Our drivers travel alone with your vehicle and hand you the keys at the destination; you are never in the car. If you need to be driven somewhere yourself, we are not the right company, and we will tell you so.
A cross country chauffeur service drives you. We drive only your car, and you travel separately.
Private driving services for your car
The job is simple: one professional driver, one car, door to door. There is no hourly rate. The driver picks the car up where it is and drives it the whole way to the delivery address. If you need a long distance private driver for the car and not for you, this is it.
What a personal driver service includes
- One driver the whole way. Your car is never handed off.
- The driver’s travel home, usually a flight, is part of your base price.
- Fuel and tolls at actual cost, with receipts. We give you a fuel and toll estimate up front.
- Photos of the car at pickup and again at delivery, every trip.
- GPS tracking during the trip. Our office can tell you where the car is at any point in the trip.
- About 1,000 miles a day, with proper rest. We do not run drivers through the night.
That is the whole service: a vetted professional behind the wheel of your own car, and one person at our office, the owner, who prices the trip and answers your questions.
A private driving company with one owner
Cross Country Driver has one owner, who has run it since 2013, and there is no call center and no software quote: the person who answers your request is the person responsible for your car.
How our personal driver service works
Tell us where the car is, where it is going, the year, make and model, and roughly when. The owner prices the trip personally and replies within one business day. Once you approve the base price, we schedule a pickup date. Your driver arrives, inspects and photographs the car with you, and leaves. You get the keys back at the destination on the delivery date planned with you, along with the fuel and toll receipts.
How to hire a personal driver
Request a quote online; it takes about a minute. Your quote comes from the owner, who prices your trip personally and replies within one business day. Approve the price, agree a pickup date, and your driver does the rest, from your door to the delivery address.
- Request a quote. Pickup and delivery locations, the car, and roughly when.
- Approve the price. We confirm the pickup date, and a deposit is due before pickup.
- Meet your driver. You will have your driver’s name before pickup. Your driver inspects and photographs the car with you.
- Follow the trip. The car is GPS-tracked, and your driver will call you about eight hours before delivery.
- Get the keys back. The car is photographed again at delivery, and you receive the fuel and toll receipts.
What a long trip looks like
On pickup day your driver inspects and photographs the car with you, then starts driving. A day covers about 1,000 miles, with proper rest, and your driver does not drive through the night. Coast to coast, that is 3 days or less. On the last day your driver calls about eight hours before delivery, hands the car over at the address, photographs it again and gives you the fuel and toll receipts.
Packing the car
A reasonable amount of personal items can travel in the car. Tell us what you are sending when you request a quote, and have them loaded before pickup.
Is there a long distance driver near me?
Yes. Our drivers travel to you, so you do not need a driver who lives nearby. We pick the car up where it is, anywhere in the lower 48 states and Alaska, and deliver it to the address you give us.
We do not serve Hawaii.
Who hires a driver instead of driving it themselves
Relocating for work or family
You fly. The car follows. It arrives on the delivery date planned with you, so you are not waiting on a carrier’s window or driving four days you can’t spare.
Snowbirds
Northeast and Midwest to Florida and Arizona in the fall, and back in the spring. Our driver takes the car; you take a short flight. Several customers book this every year.
Military PCS moves
Two cars, one driver and orders with a date on them. We move the second vehicle so the family can travel together.
Students and parents
The car goes to campus in August and comes home in May without a parent losing a week.
Older drivers
Keep the car you know; skip the 2,000 miles. Many of our customers are retirees who no longer want to make the drive themselves.
Out-of-state car purchases
Bought the right car in the wrong state? We bring it to you.
Driver vs. shipping vs. driving it yourself
A carrier is often cheaper for short runs and for cars that can’t be driven, but it comes with terminals, transfers, a one-to-three-week window from pickup to delivery, and carriers usually limit or ban personal items in the car. Driving it yourself costs fuel, tolls, three nights of hotels, meals and the days off work, and you arrive tired. A driver costs more than a carrier on most routes.
On time, the difference is plain. New York to California is about 2,800 miles and about 42 to 45 hours of driving; driving it yourself takes about 4 days, our driver 3 days or less, and a carrier a one-to-three-week window. The same applies to the drive in the other direction.
Handling
With a carrier your car is loaded, moved between terminals and unloaded. With a personal driver nothing is loaded, unloaded or transferred: one driver takes the car the whole way, and it is delivered to the door.
What a long distance personal driver costs
Expect $0.75 to $1.25 a mile as a base price, with fuel and tolls at actual cost on top. The base also covers towing, whether that is a trailer or a second vehicle towed behind the one we drive. Your base price includes your driver’s travel home, usually a flight, and the per-mile rate falls slightly on longer trips.
Typical base prices: New York to Florida, about 1,200 miles, $1,000 to $1,400 and about 1 day. Seattle to Dallas, about 2,100 miles, $1,600 to $2,300 and about 2 days. New York to California, about 2,800 miles, $1,900 to $2,500 and 3 days or less. Coast-to-coast trips come in below our usual per-mile range, because the rate falls on longer trips.
What you’ll need before pickup
- Proof that the car is insured and registered. Our exact insurance statements, as written by our attorney, are on the FAQ page.
- A short service agreement, signed before pickup.
- A deposit is due before pickup. The rest of the base price, plus fuel and tolls at actual cost with receipts, is paid after delivery. Cash or check is fine.
- The car in safe mechanical condition, with the personal items you’re sending already loaded.
Who will be driving your car
Our drivers are mostly ex-long-haul truckers and former police officers, screened with criminal, driving-record, drug and reference checks before the first trip. Both bring decades of road time and no interest in cutting corners. Our office can tell you where the car is at any point in the trip.
Questions about hiring a driver for your car
Can I hire a personal driver for long distance?

Can I hire a chauffeur to drive my car?
We do not drive people, but we will drive your car: one vetted driver takes it door to door while you travel separately and meet it at the destination.
How far in advance should I book?
A week or two of notice is comfortable. Tell us the pickup window you want in your quote request, and the quote confirms the date.
Will I know who my driver is before pickup?
You will have your driver’s name before pickup, and your driver will call you about eight hours before delivery. If your insurer wants to add the driver to your policy, we provide the license details.
Can you move more than one car?
Yes. Each vehicle gets its own driver, and we coordinate the schedule through one contact. Tell us how many vehicles you have when you request a quote.
Can I ride along with the driver?
No. Our service is for the vehicle only; you travel separately and meet the car at the destination.
Can my pet travel in the car?
